Through a massive effort of people working together, the long term Haiti Reconstructive Surgery project has successfully completed its initial phase, and when others begin pulling back, we are beginning the second phase of our long term commitment. Four different individuals donated their private planes (and we leased another) to get our teams to Haiti up until this point. However, American Airlines reopens its commercial service next weekend and we have 6 seats reserved for the next year for our reconstructive efforts. A team with members from Texas, Louisiana, California and Illinois will be the first to occupy the 6 seats on the Miami to PAP flight.

Dr. Frank Lista and his team from Toronto arrived in Dallas Saturday morning at 1:30 am (weather) and met shortly with Drs. Mitchell and Hobar before boarding the private jet bound for Port Au Prince at 4:00 am. Frank sent an update from PAP today saying they have become the busiest service at the hospital and have 8 elective cases today after having done 2 acute traumas. Not only have we become the busiest service at the Haitian Community Hospital but we have begun sending a satellite team to the Adventist Hospital and we will visit them when we go down next week to assess future needs. We have a dream to work closely with the orthopedic surgeons to salvage limbs and in those not salvaged to provide optimal stumps for prosthesis. We are assessing the prosthetic programs in Haiti to determine which ones will make optimal partners for this combined program. We will also begin exploring the needs of the facial fractures and craniofacial trauma that have been largely ignored. Dr. Michael Howard from Chicago, microvascular and lower extremity surgeon, trained by Chris Attinger, will accompany us to look at the needs for mvff reconstruction of distal third injuries in the future. We now have a database of over 200 surgeons from the 3 organizations who are potential volunteers for the work in Haiti. Dr Mitchell will be working between now and Thursday.
