5 Reasons Women Get Breast Enlargements

Breast augmentation surgery continues to be the number one cosmetic surgery performed today. Though common, the reasons for a breast enlargement may vary. Some women get breast implants to make themselves feel more comfortable in their own skin, while others would like to correct an asymmetry usually caused by extreme weight loss, changes in hormones, or pregnancy. Whatever the reason may be, women who undergo a breast augmentation aim to achieve the common goal of beautifully shaped breasts that suit her body and – most importantly of all – look natural.

At The Plastic Surgery Clinic, we perform over 400 breast augmentations a year. The most common reasons why our patients undergo this procedure are listed below:

1. Size

The number one reason why our patients undergo a breast augmentation is because they are unhappy with the overall size and shape of their breasts. In fact, many women are born with disproportionately small breasts – a condition called micromastia, where a woman’s breasts do not fully develop after puberty. Because women with micromastia often experience embarrassment or insecurity about their figures, breast implants can give them a fuller figure, and thus more confidence about their body entirely.

2. Asymmetry

Many women have asymmetrical breasts as a result of changes in hormones—for example, uneven estrogen levels or fluctuating growth spurts during puberty. While this can be a very typical situation for many women, it impacts the way she may feel about her body. As a result, many women choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery, as breast implants will help even out the breasts, making her feel more comfortable about their overall look.

3. Weight Loss

After a significant amount of weight loss, many women will find that their breasts have lost their full, perky shape. Unfortunately, since breasts are just fatty tissue, there is usually a decrease in the size depending upon the pattern in which a woman loses weight. Thankfully, breast implants will give a woman’s post weight loss breasts more fullness, all while maintaining her healthy weight.

4. Pregnancy

Childbirth creates many changes in a woman’s breast that, while good for the health of the baby, may not be to her liking afterwards. In fact, many breastfeeding mothers will choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery as a part of a mommy makeover to help restore her breasts to their pre-pregnancy state. Breast augmentation surgery post pregnancy aims to address the most common effects of birthing and breastfeeding on a woman’s body: a loss of firmness and possible “deflation” in the breasts.

5. Breast Cancer

Women who have suffered from breast cancer often get breast implants following breast cancer surgery: mastectomy – the surgical removal of one or both breasts. Moreover, even women who undergo preventative mastectomies, because of a strong family history of breast cancer, may wish to receive breast implants so that they don’t have to compromise the size and shape of their breasts.

Many prospective patients wonder: are breast implants right for me?
