Toronto Plastic Surgeon Dr. Frank Lista: Why I Love My Job

Toronto plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Lista, founder and Medical Director of The Plastic Surgery Clinic, performs hundreds of surgeries every year, from face procedures to body surgeries. With 30 years of experience, he’s had the opportunity to work with an amazing team and inspirational patients. Here’s what he loves most about coming into work every day.

Recently I was asked by a journalist, “what do you love most about your profession?” Unsurprisingly, I get this question a lot. Sometimes I have trouble answering it because there are so many things to love. But probably the one thing that gets me up in the morning every day, and working late into the night and on weekends, is that as a plastic surgeon, I’m really in the business of making people happy.

Our patients are truly overflowing with happiness after their surgery. There are some days when I can’t walk into my office because of the number of gifts patients have left for our whole team. We get cakes and bottles of wine and homemade lasagnas. That kind of gratitude is sometimes overwhelming – I definitely don’t expect presents – but it’s a testament to how life-altering undergoing a procedure with us can be.

Surgery is not something that we take lightly. It’s serious business. But plastic surgery is great because at the end of it, there is this huge, amazing reward. Patients come to us with a concern that has bothered them for their whole life, or something that’s been the result of an accident. To be able to help alleviate that concern and bring to life a dream they’ve had for years is really the best gift I could ask for.

And I know that my staff feels the same way too. So, to be working in an environment where everyone has this shared end goal of creating “happiness” is for sure, bar none, the best part about my job. It’s really the reason why we do what we do.
