The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says rhinoplasty ranked fourth in terms of the most popular cosmetic surgery two years ago.
Rhinoplasty can be performed to correct deviated septums–which often trigger chronic stuffiness, post-nasal drip, snoring, and other abnormalities. When done for cosmetic purposes, meanwhile, the procedure can get rid of bumps on the bridge of the nose as well as alter the position of the bridge, the nostrils, or the tip. According to Dallas-based plastic surgeon Jack Gunter, "Even a small adjustment made to your nose can result in a big improvement in overall facial harmony–and a big boost to your confidence." Surgeons who perform the procedure ensure that the nose appears natural and complements other facial features in terms of size, width, and angle.
Rhinoplasty generally is an outpatient procedure that results in swelling during the first week; but patients must keep in mind the side-effects of such surgery, including nosebleeds, infections, excess scar tissue, dislodged bones, and misshapen cartilage. Patients should choose a board-certified surgeon with certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, taking care to view before-and-after photographs and inquire about the doctor's track record.
