Research to Answer Liposuction Question: Does Fat Return?

Indianapolis Star

(2006-05-21)

Working with a $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, University of Colorado medical-school professor Dr. Robert Eckel is looking to answer the question of whether fat will return after liposuction, and if so, where it will come back. It is assumed by most plastic surgeons that scarring after liposuction will keep fat from returning to the area where it was taken. To research this, Eckel and his team are performing biopsies to learn more about the genes and proteins that affect the presence and location of fat. Some participants get liposuction for only the cost of the operating room, and those in the control groups could get surgery at the end of the three-year study, which began in 2004.

Research to Answer Liposuction Question: Does Fat Return?

Liposuction is permanent as long as a patients weight remains stable. Gaining weight will result in fat to return all over the body, including the previously liposuctioned area.
