(2005-01-01) No. 46, P. 69; Saner, Emine
In an article in Glamour, 26-year-old Emine Saner describes her visits to seven leading U.K. plastic surgery offices. Saner says that while she has a positive body image, she had begun worrying about looking old and felt pressure to undergo cosmetic procedures like Botox, liposuction, and breast augmentation, especially as these procedures are becoming more popular among young people in the United Kingdom.
After consultations at each of the seven surgeries, six surgeons agreed to administer Botox injections as a preventive measure, five agreed to perform liposuction (even though Saner is not overweight), and four agreed to breast augmentation. Only one surgeon refused to perform any of the procedures she requested, telling her she was too young for Botox and that she should use diet and exercise, not liposuction, to lose weight. All of the doctors informed Saner of the risks involved and warned her that surgical procedures are only a short-term solution.
