What to Expect From Your Chemical Peel

chemical-peel-torontoA glowing, spotless complexion is lying just beneath the surface of your skin and beauty experts have found that a chemical peel treatment could be your fastest way to more luminous skin. Because the skin is made up of many layers of cells, they can become damaged and destroyed in their daily contact with the environment.

And while these cells eventually turn over, the process can be slow, resulting in dryness, dullness, aging, hyperpigmentation and acne. That’s why chemical peels can be one of the best things you can do for your skin. Chemical peels remove the cells that have yet to turnover, allowing the healthy, radiant cells beneath to come to the surface, and therefore promoting a more youthful complexion.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a professional treatment performed by an experienced medical esthetician that aims to restore the skin’s natural radiance. During a chemical peel, a chemical solution of either lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid is applied to the skin to draw out impurities and damage, facilitating a quicker turnover of skin cells, and leaving you with glowing, more youthful looking skin.

Where are chemical peels performed?

Chemical peels are typically done in an office-based procedure room or outpatient surgical facility. Before the procedure, your medical esthetician will first cover your eyes with goggles and then will proceed to cleanse the skin. He or she might also protect your hair with a hairnet or surgical hair cap.

What are the different types of chemical peels?

At The Plastic Surgery Skincare Clinic, we offer a variety of chemical peels that will restore the skin’s natural radiance. If you’re unsure as to which type of peel is best for your skin, don’t worry. Prior to your treatment, one of our experienced medical estheticians will provide you with a mini skin assessment to determine the appropriate peel for you.

Superficial Peels

1. Glycolic Acid 20-30%: Glycolic acid is the most active and beneficial of the Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA). This naturally occurring acid is known for its skin benefiting properties and is the only AHA which is able to penetrate through the cell walls by virtue of its small, molecular size. Glycolic acid peels are great for those with normal/maturing skin, or who have been suffering with acne related skin problems.

2. Lactic Peel: A Lactic peel is one of the mildest forms of chemical peels available, making it well suited for those with delicate or dry skin. Lactic peels work by causing the substance that holds the skin cells together to become loose, stimulating the cells in the dermis layer of the skin to be stimulated and produce new collagen.

3. Salicylic Acid 20-30%: Salicylic acid is part of the beta hydroxyl acid family and is well suited for those with normal/maturing or acne prone/oily skin. When used in a chemical peel, salicylic acid might be found in a concentration of up to 30%. Salicylic acid can be very successful at reducing fine lines and wrinkles and diminishing the look of whiteheads and blackheads. It’s also helpful at making the skin look more even and toned.

The Miracle 10 Peel Treatment with Dermaplaning

Exfoliation therapy that combines our unique dermaplaning approach with a mild glycolic or lactic acid peel, a fruit enzyme scrub, and a soothing peppermint based clay mask. Formulated with the Plastic Surgery Skincare Clinic’s exclusive skincare line, this peel treatment is truly a relaxing experience. The procedure can be performed monthly, in less than thirty minutes, with no downtime post-treatment.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a safe and effective method of exfoliation that requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to safely and gently shave the skin’s surface. Dermaplaning aims to remove the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair. It is only performed on the face and is not used to style or shape the eyebrows, which are made up of terminal (not vellus) hair. After this layer of dry, dead cells has been carefully removed, the active ingredients in the peel treatment and skincare products that follow are able to better penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, leading to a more effective rejuvenating result.

What happens during a chemical peel?

1. Your provider will cleanse the skin with a combination of a cleanser and a fruit enzyme scrub.

2. Necessary extractions will be made at this time.

3. Your provider will then use a brush, cotton ball, gauze or sponge to apply a chemical solution typically containing lactic, glycolic acid or salicylic acid. Here, you may feel mild stinging while the chemical solution is on your skin.

4. A neutralizing solution or wash will be applied to the skin to help remove the chemical solution from the treated skin.

5. A soothing clay mask will be applied to the skin, along with a moisturizer customized to your skin type.

6. Your provider will then apply dry ice to the face, which helps disinfect and kill any excess bacteria that sits on the surface of the skin.

What happens after a chemical peel?

After a chemical peel of any depth, it’s important to follow your provider’s direction for post-peel cleansing, toning and moisturizing. It is also important to mention that treated areas will develop new skin within about two weeks. This new skin is ultra-sensitive and should be carefully protected daily with a broad spectrum sunscreen.
